Healing light therapy is  also known as Low Intensity Laser Therapy (LILT), cold lasers, soft lasers & bio-stimulating lasers.

glow uses the next  generation in LILT  the PHOTONIC SPA laser . A scanning laser ,  which varies the frequency of the light during treatment , so that it is attracted to different types of cells & tissue, and can  treat a wide variety of problems.
 
LILT is a phototherapeutic (utilises light emissions), non-invasive method of using irradiation with both red and infrared light sources to stimulate healing within the tissues and unlike High Intensity Laser Therapy (HILT) there is no heat energy produced. Low-level lasers have been used for over 30 years in many countries as therapeutic energy to bring about favourable results in both humans and animals.
LILT is the uses monochromatic light emission from a low intensity laser diode (250 mill watts or less) or an array of high intensity Super Luminous Diodes (providing total optical power in the 1000-2000 mill watt range) to treat musculoskeletal injuries, chronic or degenerative conditions, and to heal wounds. It does this through the action of photo-bio-stimulation of light reactive biological receptors (chromospheres) in the body.

The light source is placed in contact with the skin allowing the photon energy to penetrate tissue, where it interacts with various intracellular biomolecules resulting in the restoration of normal cell function and enhancement of the body's healing process.

LILT uses both red and infrared light laser. The visible red light is absorbed within the mitochondria, and the infrared is absorbed at the cell membrane. This results in a change in membrane permeability, increased ATP levels and increased DNA production. The photons absorbed by the cell membrane result in improved stability and increased activity of the ATP-dependent Na/K pump. As cell metabolism is directly influenced by Na/K movement across the membrane, increasing the gradient will affect the flow of ions & hence the overall metabolism of the cell.

Physiological effect of LILT

Short-term effects:

• Reduces pain by production and release of beta-endorphins (these are morphine like substances  produced by various cells in the body that inhibit the sensation of pain).  LILT is one of the safest and most effective ways to eliminate pain. It doesn't just treat the symptoms, it heals the cells. Regardless of age or how long a condition has been present, if it is soft tissue in nature (muscle, tendon, ligament, nerve, blood vessel, lymphatic and the covering of bone), there is a better than 80% probability that you will feel better.
• Combats stress by increasing cortisol production. Cortisol is the precursor of cortisone, and enables the body to combat the stress associated with trauma or the disease process. 
• Reduces inflammation by suppressing inflammatory enzymes that create swelling, redness, pain, and heat and enhances the release of anti-inflammatory enzymes.
  

• ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production is increased resulting in improved cellular   metabolism. ?
• DNA (deoxyribonucleicacid) production, the protein building block of tissue is ? substantially increased. ?
• Neurotransmission is facilitated due to elevated levels of serotonin and aceytylecholine. ?
• Mitochondrial activity is stimulated resulting in cell replication etc.?
• Modulation of macrophages, fibroblasts and other cells. Increases collagen production (reduction in wrinkles, scar tissue formation and keloid adhesions) and speeds up bone repair by stimulating fibroblastic and osteoblastic proliferation. Also stimulates nerve regeneration, muscle relaxation and atonicity-lack of muscle tone.
• Angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels) and an increase in density of capillary bed. ?
• Regulates cell membrane potential, essential in Na, CL, and K ion transfer (electrolyte? balance). ?
• Cytokines and other chemicals enhancing the cellular communications are released. (Stimulates the release of helpful healing enzymes).

• The immune response is stimulated. LILT in the correct frequency appears to be anti-viral, antifungal, and anti-herpetic
• Enhances lymphatic drainage, which increases circulation and speeds healing.
• The histamine response is positively altered. ?
• Production of the growth hormone is increased. ?
• Stimulation of the healing process is accompanied by relief of symptoms.

Roscea can be confused and co-exist with acne vulgaris and/or seborrheic dermatitis. People that are fair-skinned (European or Celtic ancestry) are disproportionately affected with rosacea. Rosacea affects both men and women of all ages especially in the 30-50 age group, but middle-aged women are more susceptible because of hot flushes caused by menopause.

Characteristics of rosacea include:
1. Red papules and sometimes pustules on the nose, forehead, cheeks and chin. Rarely it involves the trunk and upper limbs.
2. Frequent blushing or flushing.
3. A red face due to persistent redness and/or telangiectasia "broken capillaries"
4. Dry and flaky facial skin
5. Aggravation by sun exposure and hot and spicy food or drink (anything that reddens the face) Sensitive skin: burning and stinging, especially with make-up, sunscreens and other facial creams
6. Red, sore or gritty eyelids including papules and styes (blepharitis and/or conjunctivitis) Enlarged unshapely nose with prominent pores (sebaceous hyperplasia) and fibrous thickening (rhinophyma)
7. Firm swelling of other facial areas including the eyelids (blepharophyma)

Because of its red-faced, acne-like effects on personal appearance, however, it can cause significant psychological, social and occupational problems if left untreated.

In recent surveys by the National Rosacea Society, nearly 70 percent of rosacea patients said this condition had lowered their self-confidence and self-esteem, and 41 percent reported it had caused them to avoid public contact or cancel social engagements. Among rosacea patients with severe symptoms, nearly 70 percent said the disorder had adversely affected their professional interactions, and nearly 30 percent said they had even missed work because of their condition.

The cause of rosacea is unknown. There are several theories regarding the origin of overactive facial blood vessels and inflammation, including genetic, environmental, vascular, inflammatory factors. Hair follicle mites may be involved in at least some cases, as these are found in greater numbers within rosacea papules. An increased incidence of rosacea has been reported in those who carry the stomach bacterium, helicobacter pylori, but most dermatologists do not believe it to be the cause of rosacea. Rosacea also may be aggravated by the incorrect skincare routine, and especially by application of topical steroids.

Treatment of Rosacea:

Rosacea can be treated and reduced with course of LILT; glow healing light therapy, in conjunction with & maintained by the correct skincare routine; glow aqua facial and nutritional supplements. In extreme cases, HILT can be also used.

ChromaClear combines five treatment technologies within one state of the art system. How Does It Work?
The P.F.T. (photo Flash Therapy) System will deliver a pulsed - light which penetrates the skin and is absorbed by the melanin in the hair. The absorption heats the hair shaft and the energy is transmitted to  the hair follicles. This results in the follicle being heated to a sufficient temperature which will destroy the hair follicle by each flash, the hairs then fall out in the next 2 - 3 weeks. The heat works to disable the hair follicle cells that are responsible for the growth of the new hair. The amount of treatments vary with each client, but you will likely need 6 or more treatments.

What Areas Can Be Treated?
Any areas of the face and body can be treated with pulse light. The darker the hair the richer the melanin and the better the result. Light and fine hairs are more difficult to eliminate, but they are not impossible.

Does It Hurts?
For most people there is virtually no pain. The feeling of the treatment is extremely variable from one person to another, it depends on the concentration of melanin in the skin and the size and density of the hair.

What Should I Expect After The Treatment?
In most cases there is no visible effects. Therefore the treatment does not interfere with normal activities. Redness could appear on the skin indicating successful treatment. Hair is detached from its nourishment but it still remains in its sheath during the renewal of the epidermis (peeling). A light exfoliation 10 - 15 days after the session can speed up the rate at which the hair falls out.

Tips for Luscious Summer Skin (from the SCMP)

In the summer humidity you’d think moisturising your skin was the last thing you needed to worry about, but the humidity in fact works to impair our cooling systems so we are more inclined to overheat and so dehydrate.
 

1. So, tip number one is the old favorite. Drink water — lots of it — and eat fruit and vegetables with a high water content.
2. Next, wear sunblock and not only because you want to prevent premature aging, but because if damaged by the sun, your skin becomes less effective at retaining moisture.
3. For the same reason, avoid skincare products containing retinol and fruit acids. In sunlight these too can cause the skin to become sensitised.
4. Avoid alcohol-based toners and wipes which while refreshing, will dehydrate your skin.
5. Moisturisers do seem to slip off your face so use a light one, and apply frequently. To give your skin the support it needs, use concentrated hydrating serums and ampoules rather than heavy creams more suitable for winter.

1. Chocolate causes acne.
True, however this is a bit of a trick: there is no research that links eating cocoa to an increase in acne however, there is evidence to link a diet high in dairy products to increased acne – and of course most chocolate contains a lot of dairy. The same research showed that skimmed milk did not reduce the acne so we cannot assume that it is the fat content of the milk.

One of the reasons teenagers often suffer increased acne is a problem of misassociation. They have a natural need for fats – essential fatty acids (EFAs) -- to help balance their fluctuating hormones. The body craves and seeks to eat more fat and to the average teenager, chocolate would satisfy the need. Of course, chocolate does not contain EFAs but does contain the acne-inflaming dairy products – so a rise in acne.
Generally speaking, acne is caused by hormones, overactive oil glands and dead skin cells that lodge in skin pores. Cleansing properly and eating healthily to help balance hormones (EFAs are found in some fish, nuts and seeds, some green leafy vegetable, etc) will help. SKEYNDOR also produce an effective oil-control range which is available from Glow.

2. Organic products are better for your skin.
Possibly. Organic food is better for you since it is likely to contain fewer pesticides and more likely contain the vitamins and minerals you do need, but there is no evidence that “organic” beauty products are necessarily better for you, largely because the industry is not regulated. This means that a product can contain 1% organic product, and claim to be organic. The rest of the product can be whatever it wants to be.

Quality is the keyword.

People also get confused with the terms organic and natural. We do know that a lot of products found in nature are effective – essential oils and botanical products, for example. These are used extensively in the SpaSenses range of treatments and products that we use at glow. These products contain botanicals known to be effective at relaxing/energizing the body (such as ginger, green tea, myrrh and neroli) in sufficient quantities to actually be effective.

3. Only women get cellulite.
True. Women – but not men – have a particular structure in one of the fat layers beneath the skin (hypodermis) where the fat cells are held in a mesh of connective tissue (collagen and elastin) in such a way that dimpling can occur. Ninety percent of women will have cellulite— even those who are slim, fit and healthy. In fact, sometimes people who are overweight appear not to have cellulite and it is only when they lose the fat that the cellulite can be seen.

The cellulite appears when there is a loss in elasticity of the connective tissue, poor circulation and fluid retention --  usually caused by hormonal changes (puberty, pregnancy, menopause, birth control pills, aging) or simply a genetic predisposition. Cellulite reduction treatments at Glow enhance the blood flow, firm the connective tissue, shrink fat cells, reduce cellular fluid retention and increase collagen growth so effectively reducing the appearance of cellulite.

4. Blackheads are caused by dirt.
False. Blackheads are caused by partially-blocked pores. The "black" appearance of them is not caused by dirt, but by the oxidising effect of air on the sebum (oil) in the blocked pore and the melanin pigment from the dead skin cells. The best way to remove blackheads is to remove the cause of them -- excessive sebum and dead skin cells -- by using an effective cleansing routine daily, a weekly exfoliating product and monthly facials.

5.  Sensitive skin is something you're born with.
False. Sensitivity can occur at any time – and especially in Hong Kong with the pollution and strong UV exposure. Many people may experience first-time sensitivity or irritations in their 30s, and for any number of reasons: hormonal changes, seasonal reactions or latent allergies.

At Glow we use SKEYNDOR’s Aquatherm range which contains active ingredients for calming the skin and water from Salies de Béarn in France. This water has been used to cure sensitive skin since 1857 and this effectiveness has been medically proven.

6. If you have oily skin, you don’t need to use moisturiser.
False. Moisturiser is designed to add moisture, that is water, to your skin, and to keep moisture in. There are many women who have an oily complexion, but their skin is still dehydrated. You can test whether you skin is dehydrated by gently pulling it; if you see fine lines radiating out from the ‘pull point’, your skin is dehydrated. Dehydrated skin also looks dull.

Air-conditioning, smoking, medications and harsh cleansing products will dehydrate your skin. To fix the problem the first step is of course to drink more water more often but the right moisturizer is also important. Those with oily-skin should choose moisturisers that will regulate sebum production yet still keep the skin hydrated. Naturally, Glow has moisturizing creams and treatments for all skin types.

7. Cutting your eyelashes /shaving does not makes you hair thicker.
True. Cutting, shaving or even waxing will not change the genetic composition of your hair colour/thickness/or texture. With shaving and cutting, the hairs get truncated at the skin surface so, as the rest of the shaft emerges, it appears thicker than a whole hair that grows with a finer tip from the hair follicle. Waxing pulls the hair out at the root so the growth is from the hair follicle and has a finer tip as it emerges. Eventually damage to the root may cause the hair to thin.

On the other hand, light therapy will kill the hair follicle after a number of sessions. For those with blonde hair, we recommend electrolysis. Glow offers permanent hair reduction using latest generation IPL.


8. You should invest in a cream specially designed for your eye area.
True. The skin around the eyes is more delicate than the skin on the rest of your face as it is thinner and has no sebaceous (oil) glands. This skin is prone to become sensitized, dehydrated and suffer thin lines and eye creams are designed to deal specifically with these problems. You should also take care not to use too much eyecream as this can cause puffiness. SKEYNDOR sells a bi-zone soft face mask that treats both the eye zone and face at the same time.

9. Anti-aging products simply plump up the skin to that it appears less wrinkly.
False. Although moisturising treatments do plump up the skin to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, today there are also treatments that actually revitalise the skin at cell level. Glow uses at least three different cutting-edge treatments which activate the skin cells.

10. Drinking red wine causes broken capillaries in your skin.
True. In a way. The fine capillaries in your skin become broken if they are already weak and experience a sudden increase in blood pressure that causes the fine capillaries to burst.

Your body diverts blood to the skin in an effort to cool the body so sudden changes in your body temperature means sudden increases in blood pressure in the capillaries. This happens when we drink alcohol, eat spicy foods, step out of air-conditioning to exercise outside on a very humid day, and so on.
